Content

MegaTokyo tells the story of two Americans Piro and Largo, who are stuck without money in Tokyo. Most of the humor in the comic is based on video games, in-jokes about manga and anime, and cultural differences between the U.S. and Japan.

At the beginning try Piro and Largo to get tickets for the U.S. entertainment trade show Electronic Entertainment Expo ( E3) - without success. Largo is about so frustrated that he gets drunk, his pants down leaves and insulted the E3 massive. He wakes up later on a plane to Japan: Piro had decided to leave the U.S. for safety for a while, and without further ado bought two way tickets to Tokyo. Once there, the two immediately storm the toy and computer stores. Since they doing but put on their credit cards, they can no longer afford a return ticket and sit tight in Japan.

In the further course of plots from which the draw with manga character dynamics of emotional stress ratios between Piro on the one hand and the individual female main characters the other hand. For although he always has the best and friendly intentions, the girl opposite ensures Piros awkward behavior repeatedly discord. So it happens that he buries in manga to find it tips or sitting around somewhere and ponders how one manages not to hit a woman over the head - and he again missed an appointment that's why. In addition, he has little self-confidence and self-esteem, therefore just tries to escape those who actually feel something for him (which he does not recognize or interpreted as compassion ), and not about his own feelings clear.

Another storyline that strong computer game character, is to Largos " fighting evil ", where he can be seen latter in everything and everybody thinks that the threat may be real but when about Ed tries to destroy Ping or Dom Erika for Sega wants to hire an advertising figure.

Due to the enormous difference in the narrative time (since 14 August 2000 ) and the story time (50 days plus one per chapter), it is sometimes difficult to keep the context in mind. On the translation side, the individual courses of action to story threads are therefore grouped together as an aid.

Origin of the name

MegaTokyo got its name because Rodney Caston the Internet domain after a failed project for Anime News ( " Slashdot Anime " ) set available for internet comic.

The Tokyo of the future is in manga and anime often referred to as "Mega Tokyo" or " Neo -Tokyo " (for example in Akira ). In many of these stories, the city is devastated by disasters or a nuclear war, but it is then built larger and more beautiful again.

Role Rodney Castons

Gallagher and Caston had different ideas about how the comic should develop. Gallagher took over more and more the work of the author. Finally, the two separated in May 2002 and Gallagher Caston bought the domain from. The legal details of the separation remained private.

In January 2005, a controversy broke out after Scott Kurtz of PvP in a forum wrote a post in which he congratulated Caston to his impending fatherhood and Fred Gallagher accused of stealing Megatokyo of Caston. Gallagher declared that there were creative differences and pointed out that the separation was peaceful. Also Caston expressed shortly thereafter accordingly.
