Church of Mels

Mels is a municipality in the constituency Sarganserland in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. It is located in Seez valley, west of the neighboring community Sargans and is in terms of area, the largest municipality in the canton.

Also, the municipality includes the settlements Holy Cross at Mels, Plons, Ragnatsch, as well as the hamlets Butz, St. Martin, Mädris, TILs, the hillside community Vermol and Walser villages Schwendihotel and white firs in Weisstannental.

Geography

Mels is located between the mountain Gonzen, the Rhine and Seez. The municipal area of Mels is the Pizol. Until the early 18th century, the settlement area of Mels for the most part was a swampy landscape. The deepest point form the Seezebene ( 457 m ) and the highest the Big Slice ( 2'937 m).

Population

The Turnverein Mels is multiple Swiss champion in the disciplines of bars and floor exercise. In 1993, the humorous acrobatics troupe D' Holmikers was founded, which have since participated in numerous international shows. In UHC Sarganserland, a nationally known and playing in the National League B floorball club, several squad players from the community Mels can be found.

The music company Konkordia Mels is one of the oldest and most successful clubs of Mels. With various " daughter clubs " such as youth music, Jungbläser and young drummers she conducts intensive youth development.

Shopping centers

Near the A3 motorway are several large shopping centers which regional needs of the Sarganserland cover: The Pizolpark Migros, the Pizol center of the Coop and various other centers such as the CPB Riet.
