History

Menahga was founded in 1891. It was named after the Ojibwe word for the Blueberry River. A year later the town was incorporated as an independent municipality. The first white settlers arrived in the 1870s from the eastern U.S. in the region, while the majority of the later settlers came from Finland. 1891, the city was connected to the network of the Great Northern Railway. In the same year a post office was opened.
