Mervyn King (economist)

Sir Mervyn Allister King, Baron King of Lothbury GBE ( born March 30, 1948 in Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire, UK) was from July 2003 to July 1, 2013, the Governor of the Bank of England. His successor, since July 1, Mark Carney.

Life

King studied economics at King's College (Cambridge) at the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England. Later, he was a visiting professor at Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts ). He has received, among others an honorary doctorate from the University of Abertay Dundee.

From 1984 to 1991 he was professor at the " London School of Economics and Political Science", then to 1997, chief economist at the " Bank of England ", the British central bank. From 1997 to 2003 he was deputy governor, from July 2003 to July 2013 he was the Governor of the British central bank.

He is committed, together with the UK Financial Services Authority and the Ministry of Finance for a liberal financial center of London. Britain opposes (as of 2011 ) to introduce the pressure of many EU countries a financial transaction tax.

In May 2012, King warned overlooking the Greek financial crisis facing a " storm from the continent ."

King married on May 26, 2007 in Helsinki, his longtime girlfriend, who divorced his first wife, Barbara Melander Finnish entrepreneur ( b. 1946 ). King is a fan of the Premier League clubs " Aston Villa " has a country house near Canterbury and a flat in Notting Hill.

On July 19th, 2013 King was admitted as a life peer with the title Baron King of Lothbury in the House of Lords.
