Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale

Rochdale is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester in England. Administrative center is the city of Rochdale, in almost half of the population lives. Other important towns in the district are Heywood, Littleborough, Middleton, Milnrow and Wardle.

The reorganization of the limits and the capabilities of local authorities led in 1974 to form the Metropolitan Borough. Were fused while the County Borough Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton the Municipal Boroughs and Urban Districts Castleton, Littleborough, Milnrow and Wardle. These authorities previously belonged to the county of Lancashire.

1986 Rochdale was in fact a Unitary Authority, as the central government dissolved the superordinate management of Greater Manchester. Rochdale remained for ceremonial purposes part of Greater Manchester, as well as for individual higher-level tasks such as police, fire and public transport.

Twinning

Rochdale is twinned with Bielefeld (since 1953), Tourcoing (France, since 1956 ), Sahiwal (Pakistan, since 1988) and Lviv (Ukraine, 1992 ).
