Meythet

Meythet is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Meythet is located on 446 m above sea level. M., about 3 km northwest of the town of Annecy (air line). The community extends in the Basin of Annecy in the foothills, north of the mouth of the Thiou ( outflow of Lac d' Annecy ) in Fier, in Genevois.

The area of ​​3.24 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the basin of Annecy. The settlement area occupies the valley of Fier and the high terrace of Meythet, which is around 20 meters above the valley floor. The boundaries of the municipal area in the east and south from Fier, the gorge-like cuts below Meythet in the plateau, and to the west by the river Nant de Gillon. With 460 m above sea level. M. is reached the highest point of the municipality at the airport on the plateau north of Meythet.

Neighboring communities of Metz-Tessy Meythet are in the north, Annecy- le -Vieux and Annecy in the east, Cran- Gevrier in the south and Poisy and Épagny in the West.

History

The territory of Meythet been inhabited since prehistoric times, and during the Roman period. For the first time the place is mentioned in the 13th century under the name Meythez, and until the 18th century the spelling Meithet was used. The origin of the place name is not clear. Some sources passes the community name from the Latin word messis ( harvest because of the fertile soil in the area of the village ), the others ago by mansus ( in the meaning of house or field).

Population

With 8367 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Meythet one of the larger towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1960s was due to the proximity to Annecy recorded a marked increase in population. During the 70s, the highest growth rates were recorded. It was soon built over the entire plateau, so that the land reserves melted away quickly, which is why since the beginning of the 80s only small fluctuations. It was not until in recent years a renewed increase in the number of inhabitants. The settlement area has grown together seamlessly with that of Annecy and Cran- Gevrier. The municipality is part of the agglomeration of Annecy.

Economy and infrastructure

Meythet has long been a predominantly coined by agriculture village. In the course of the 20th century was the rapid development into an industrial community (textile industry and metal processing). In the valley of the Fier an extensive industrial and commercial zone has developed in recent decades. Here, service businesses, shops and traders settled.

The village region has a very well developed. It lies on the old main road N508 that runs from Annecy to Bellegarde- sur -Valserine. Today Meythet is relieved by a local bypass from through traffic. Further road links exist with Poisy and Metz -Tessy. The nearest links to the A41 motorway, which crosses and cuts the municipality, is located at a distance of about 3 km. During the Second World War the village of Annecy- Meythet airport was built north.
