Cran-Gevrier

Cran- Gevrier is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Cran- Gevrier is at 427 m above sea level. M., about 2.5 km west of the town of Annecy (air line). The community extends in the Basin of Annecy in the foothills of the Alps, at the mouth of Thiou ( outflow of Lac d' Annecy ) in Fier, in Genevois.

The area of ​​4.80 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the basin of Annecy. The settlement area occupies the valley of Fier and the adjacent south ridge of Gevrier, which is about 80 m higher than the valley floor. The boundaries of the municipal area in the north and northwest from Fier, the gorge-like cuts below Cran -Gevrier in the plateau and has several Talmäander. History

The territory of Cran- Gevrier was already inhabited during the Roman period. On the hill of Gevrier remains of a Roman villa was found. Gevrier as is also the older of the two places. Its name derives from either the Gallo-Roman personal name Grabriaccus or on the word Guivre ( mythical serpent, whose job it was to guard treasures, this snake also figures as an emblem ) back. In the Middle Ages, the Château d' ALERY was built, which Cran became the center of a small rule. Population

With 17,358 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Cran- Gevrier one of the largest municipalities in the department of Haute- Savoie. Cran- Gevrier developed in the early 19th century as an industrial location. The former industries have now changed.
