Chavanod

Chavanod is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Chavanod is located on 508 m above sea level. M., about 7 km west of the town of Annecy (air line). This former farm extends to the west of the basin from Annecy in the foothills of the Alps on a plateau some 100 meters above the valley of Fier, opposite Lovagny.

The area of ​​13:36 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Genevois. The northern boundary runs partly on the slope below Chavanod, partly in the valley of Fier. This here flows from east to west, alternately in a flat valley floor and in deep canyons ( Gorges du Fier ). From the south ends of the Ruisseau du Marais de l' Aile, also sunk deeply into the plateau, in the Fier. History

The territory of Chavanod been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Chavanod is first documented in the early 15th century. The name goes back to the Old French word Chavane ( small house ).

Attractions

The village church of Chavanod was built in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style. In Champanod the chapel Notre- Dame-des- Laboureurs. Of the secular buildings, the Château de la Croix and the ruins of the old castle Chavaroche be mentioned.

Population

With 2290 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Chavanod belongs to the medium-sized towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the population steadily increased due to high levels of emigration from (1901 were still in Chavanod counted 726 inhabitants). Since the mid-1960s, however, was due to its proximity to Annecy again recorded a marked increase in population.
