Duingt

Duingt is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Duingt is located on 453 m above sea level. M., about 10 km southeast of the town of Annecy (air line). The village extends along a wide, protruding into the Lac d' Annecy rocky peninsula at the northern foot of the massif of bauges belonging Taillefer, across from Talloires and the Roc de Chère.

The area of ​​4.39 km ² municipal area includes a section on the western shore of Lake Annecy. On the peninsula of Duingt which divided the lake in the smaller Petit Lac in the Southeast and Grand Lac in the northwest, there are some steep riverside areas, otherwise the lake shore is relatively flat. History

The territory of Duingt been inhabited since the Neolithic period and during the Roman period. First mentioned is the place in the 12th century under the name Duginum. The etymology of the name is unclear. While some sources attribute the name to the Celtic word dunums (fortress), others lead him forth from the Burgundian personal names Dugo.

Since the Middle Ages Duingt formed the center of a reign. In 1793 the two communities Duingt and Dhere were merged and then wore for some time the double name Duingt - Dhere before today's official municipality name was introduced.

Attractions

The parish church of Duingt was built in the 19th century in the Gothic Revival style. Duingt has two locks, but can not be visited, and once belonged to the Sales family. The Château de Duingt (also known as Château de Ruphy and Château Vieux ) is located on a small island at the end of the peninsula of Duingt and is connected by a causeway to the mainland. The original castle was built here in the 11th century. The castle acquired its present appearance in conversion and new construction in the period from the 17th to the 19th century. In Dhere, Château d' Héré, which was built in the 15th century stands. In the old town, many houses in the typical Savoyard style of the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved.

Population

With 877 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Duingt one of the small towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the population steadily increased due to high levels of emigration from (1861 were Duingt still counted 367 inhabitants). Since the early 1960s was due to the attractive residential location and close to Annecy has noted a significant increase in population.
