Annecy-le-Vieux

Annecy- le -Vieux is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the capital of the Canton of Annecy- le -Vieux in the arrondissement of Annecy.

Geography

Annecy- le -Vieux is located at 480 m above sea level. M., about 3 km northeast of the town of Annecy (air line). The community extends in the plane on the north shore of Lake Annecy, in the basin of Annecy, in the foothills on the northwest foot of the Mont Veyrier, in Genevois.

The area of ​​17.01 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the basin of Annecy. The main settlement area extends in the 3 km wide plain stretching between the north shore of Lake Annecy and the river of Fier. It is on average 450 meters above sea level. M. This level is limited in the north- east by a Moränenhöhe, which was deposited by the ice age glaciers here. In the north, the border is always along the Fier, the first cut in a V-shaped valley flows into the surrounding plateau, below the confluence of the Filière the valley widens, however, and now has a wide Talniederung on.

At Annecy- le -Vieux, near the village itself includes several different settlements, ancient hamlets, which are largely grown together, namely:

Neighboring towns of Annecy -le- Vieux are Pringy, Argonay and Villaz in the north, Nâves - Parmelan, Dingy- Saint- Clair and Alex in the east, Veyrier -du -Lac to the south and Annecy, Meythet and Metz -Tessy in the West.

History

The territory of Annecy- le -Vieux was settled very early. On the shores of Lac d' Annecy remains were found of stilt houses. In Roman times the Lac d' Annecy was in the plain north of a town called Boutae, which probably numbered about 2,000 inhabitants. At the site of the present Annecy- le -Vieux, a Roman was named Annicius build a big estate, the Anniciaca (estate of Annicius ) was baptized. In the 6th century Boutae was destroyed during the invasions of the Burgundians. The residents left the place and founded in protected locations in the surrounding hills new villages.

Some residents of the former Boutae settled at the manor Anniciaca. This quickly developed into the most important town near the northern shore of Lac d' Annecy, which was attached. Attractions

The church of Saint -Laurent is at the center of the old town center of Annecy- le -Vieux. It was in 1849 built on the site of an earlier church, which was destroyed during the French Revolution. The town's landmark is the corresponding Romanesque bell tower, which was acquired by the predecessor. It was built in the 12th century. For renovation work in 1988 murals were discovered in the 15th century.

In the old town, many houses in the typical Savoyard style have been preserved. Particularly noteworthy are the Villa Dunand, the Château de la Pesse from the 14th century, the Château de la Cour, the Villa de la Tour ( residence of the writer Eugène Sue ) and the Café Brunet.

Outside the village there are the chapels of Provins and Frontenex and the modern Church of Albigny. Another attraction is the beautiful beach on the north shore of Lake Annecy.

Population

With 20,012 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Annecy- le -Vieux, one of the largest municipalities in the department of Haute- Savoie. During the 20th century the population grew steadily. Particularly strong growth was recorded during the 1960s and the first half of the 70s. Over time, the entire plane was built over by apartment buildings and industrial plants so that no separation between Annecy and Annecy- le -Vieux is more visible today. Larger single-family house areas have been built to the preferred residential area on a hillside on the heights of the plateau and near the lake. The municipality is part of the agglomeration of Annecy.

Economy and infrastructure

Since the mid 19th century, Annecy- le -Vieux has developed initially for the industrial community and later to the residential community. Industrial and commercial zones are located in the plane and in the area of Les Glaisins. Of note are numerous companies in the high technology ( computer science and communication) as well as companies in the metal processing, precision engineering and precision engineering industries. There are also numerous service companies, trading companies and shops.

Annecy- le -Vieux is also an important educational center. In addition to the public schools to high school, it is the location of a campus of the Université de Savoie, the various institutes are affiliated, including an engineering school and the world-renowned LAPP ( Laboratoire d' Annecy- le -Vieux de Physique of Particules ).

The city region has a very well developed. It is crossed by the main road N201 that runs from Annecy to Saint -Julien -en- Genevois and on to Geneva. Other important road links exist with La Roche- sur -Foron, Thones and Faverges. The nearest links to the A41 motorway is located at a distance of about 4 km. By several bus lines Annecy- le -Vieux is connected to Annecy. Thus, the main railway station Annecy on the railway line from Chambery to Annemasse is easily accessible.
