Michael Richard Cote

Life

Michael Richard Cote studied at St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Pope Paul VI. ordained him on June 29, 1975 at St. Peter's Basilica to the priest.

At the Catholic University of America, he studied canon law and acquired in 1981 in this subject the licentiate.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop May 9, 1995 in Portland and Titular Bishop of Cebarades. The Bishop of Portland, Joseph John Gerry, OSB, gave him on 27 July of the same year the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Robert Edward Mulvee, Coadjutor Bishop of Providence, and Raymond Leo Burke, Bishop of La Crosse. As a motto he chose Above All Charity ( Above all, love each other, Col 3:14 ).

On 11 March 2003, he was appointed Bishop of Norwich, and introduced into the office on 14 May of the same year.

In the U.S. bishops' conference he directs since 2001 Region I and was also a member of the Sub-Commission for the youth.
