Raymond Leo Burke

Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke ( * June 30, 1948 in Richland Center, Wisconsin ) is a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Raymond Leo Burke was born as the youngest of the six children of Thomas Burke and his wife Marie. The father died in the year 1956, when Raymond Leo Burke was only eight years old. Later the family moved to Wisconsin to Stratford. From 1962 to 1968 Burke attended Holy Cross Seminary in La Crosse, Wisconsin. From 1968 to 1971 he studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and from 1971 to 1975 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

On June 29, 1975 Raymond Leo Burke received by Pope Paul VI. in St. Peter's Basilica, the sacrament of Holy Orders. From 1975 to 1980 he was in his home diocese of La Crosse associate rector of the Cathedral of St. Joseph the Worker ( Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman ) in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Bishop of La Crosse

On December 10, 1994, Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of La Crosse and donated him on 6 January 1995 in St. Peter's episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Curia archbishops and cardinals of the Curia later Giovanni Battista Re and Jorge María Mejía. The official inauguration with enthronement in the Cathedral of La Crosse was held on 22 February of the same year.

During his tenure in La Crosse Burke did Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, build a shrine.

Archbishop of Saint Louis

On 2 December 2003, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of St. Louis - as successor by Justin Francis Rigali, who was appointed to Philadelphia - where Burke was officially inaugurated on 26 January 2004. Archbishop Burke taught Masses in the extraordinary form of the Roman rite. He invited the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest to build a house in the diocese. In his time as Archbishop of St. Louis, he was spiritual director of the merger of the consecrated virgins in the United States. 6 May 2008 Burke was appointed by Pope Benedict at the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts and the Congregation for the Clergy.

Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura and Cardinal

On 27 June 2008 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura and at the same time as President of the Supreme Court of the Vatican City State. He was the first non - European to board a tribunal of the Curia. Furthermore he became the 10th U.S. Americans who served in the Roman Curia. In solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title of Sant'Agata dei Goti diakonia in the College of Cardinals.

On December 16, 2013 Burke was replaced by Pope Francis of the Congregation for Bishops, which he joined in 2011. On December 19, 2013 Burke was dismissed from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.
