Michael Schjønberg

Michael Schjønberg -Christensen ( born January 19, 1967 in Esbjerg ) is a former Danish football player and current coach. Since January 2013 he works as an assistant coach at the Norwegian first division side Vålerenga Oslo.

Career as a player

Association

Schjønberg began in his home town of Esbjerg with football games. After joining SGI Esbjerg Esbjerg fB he played from 1987 to 1990 four seasons in the second division. He then moved into the German 2nd Bundesliga Hannover 96, with whom he was the DFB Pokal 1991/92 win. 1994 Schjønberg returned back to his homeland and signed for Danish first division club Odense BK. There he came in the 1993/94 season seven times and qualified for use with the Association for the UEFA Cup in 1994/95, in the Odense BK was eliminated in the quarter -finals. After he came in August 1996 for Odense BK still in the qualifying round of the UEFA Cup in 1996/97 against Sliema Wanderers for use, he played from September 1996 to 1 FC Kaiserslautern in the German 2nd Bundesliga. With this he rose again in 1997 in the Bundesliga and a year later became German champion. Schjønbergs 1-0 winning goal on matchday one against Bayern Munich was his first goal in the Bundesliga.

A spectacular performance had Schjønberg on 33 matchday of the season 1999/2000 in the game against Kaiserslautern SC Freiburg: Already after 30 minutes had to replace the injured goalkeeper Georg Koch by Uwe Gospodarek coach Otto Rehhagel. National

His first cap for the national team of Denmark made ​​Schjønberg on January 8, 1995 in the group stage match of the King Fahd Cup against Saudi Arabia. Overall Schjønberg made ​​44 caps and scored three goals. He participated in the European Championships in England in 1996 and 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands in 1998 and in part at the World Cup in France. The final group game against the Czech Republic at Euro 2000 on 21 June 2000, which was lost 0-2, was Schjønbergs last international match.

Stations after active career

Schjønberg changed after his departure as an active soccer player into coaching. After one season as a youth coach at the 1 FC Kaiserslautern, he went temporarily to his homeland and took along with Allan Nielsen as coach at Herfølge BK. As of November 2005, he worked as an assistant on the side of Peter Neururer at Hannover 96 After his resignation end of August 2006 Schjønberg was responsible for the first team for a game in the DFB Cup against Dynamo Dresden. He then took over but the second team of Hannover 96 in the league after Dieter Hecking was engaged as the successor of Peter Neururer.

In April 2007 Schjønberg returned as sports director for 1.FC Kaiserslautern. After poor performance of the second division, he resigned in November 2007.
