Michelangelo Anselmi

Michelangelo Anselmi, Michelangelo da Lucca, Michelangelo da Siena and lo Scalabrino, (c. 1491/92 probably in Lucca, † 1554-1556 Parma ) was an Italian painter and fresco artist.

Life and work

Michelangelo Anselmi was the son of Antonio Anselmi. Around 1500 the family moved to Siena, where Anselmi at Sodom and Bartolomeo Neroni learned the art of painting. 1511 he is there first documented as a painter. His early works show strong influences by Domenico Beccafumi and Baldassare Peruzzi. Around 1515 he moved to Parma, where he is mentioned in 1520 as a highly valued painter of frescoes and altarpieces. Here he comes under the spell of art by Antonio da Correggio, with whom he worked in the cathedral together.

After the Brotherhood of the newly built Parmaer church of Santa Maria della Steccata the Parmigianino actually commissioned after several years of delay deprived the order of the decoration of the apse and Giulio Romano this order did not accept because of its difficulty, Michelangelo Anselmi has been committed for the 1541 and executed it.

1538 Michelangelo was first traveled to Venice in 1542 he was in Mantua and in 1544 to find in Siena. 1546 followed by a further stay in Venice before he returned again in 1547 to Parma, where he carried out further significant orders and came Raphael and the beginning of Mannerism in contact via Giulio Romano also with art.

Michelangelo Anselmi is considered one of the most important followers of Correggio, who understood his style harmoniously merge with that of his Sienese models. His paintings are characterized by a solid structure with warm and bright colors.
