Midland Metro

The Midland Metro is a regional light rail in the West Midlands in England, which connects Birmingham with the neighboring cities of West Bromwich, Wednesbury and Wolverhampton.

Currently the only line is the 20.2 km long link between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, which was opened on 31 May 1999. It largely follows a disused railway line for many years of the Great Western Railway. The southern terminus is the Snow Hill station in Birmingham city center. Only shortly before Wolverhampton leaves the Midland Metro to the railroad tracks and continues as a "real " tram to the terminus of St. George's.

Future Plans

Although the success of the line has fallen far short of expectations, several enhancements are planned. It was investigated to guide the tram in the city center of Birmingham underground, as is the case for example in the German city trains. Since the cost is too high for it seemed, it was decided to carry out an initial phase overground. This is up in March 2015 to create a connection from Birmingham Snow Hill train station to Birmingham New Street Station.
