Miguel Darío Miranda y Gómez

Miguel Darío Miranda y Gómez Cardinal (born 19 December 1895 in León, Guanajuato, † March 15, 1986 ) was a Mexican cardinal and bishop of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

After completing his studies at the seminary in León and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, the son of Cipriano Miranda and his wife María Gómez de las Nieves was consecrated on October 28, 1918 as a priest. After that, he was until 1925 in León in pastoral work automatically and began teaching in 1929 in his former seminary. From 1925 to 1926 he served as Director of the National Social Secretariat. Due to the persecution of Christians under President Plutarco Elías Calles, he was imprisoned from 1926 to 1929 and had to go into exile.

On 1 October 1937 he was by Pius XI. appointed bishop of Tulancingo. The Archbishop of Michoacán, Leopoldo Ruiz y Flores, donated to him on 8 December of the same year in Guadalupe episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were José Ignacio Márquez y Toriz, Koadjutorerzbischof of Puebla de los Angeles, and Maximino Ruiz y Flores, auxiliary bishop in Mexico City. In support of Luis Martínez y Rodríguez, he was appointed on 20 December 1955 Koadjutorerzbischof of Mexico and Titular Archbishop of Selymbria. After the death of Luis Martínez y Rodríguez on 28 June 1956, he became his successor as Archbishop of Mexico City and thus Primate of the Church in Mexico.

Miranda was a staunch advocate of social justice and took in the last three years in the Second Vatican Council from 1958 to 1963 he was President of CELAM. On April 28, 1969 it took Paul VI. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Nostra Signora di Guadalupe a Monte Mario in the College of Cardinals. However, he never had the opportunity to participate in a conclave, as he crossed the age of 80 years on 19 December 1975. After his resignation as Archbishop of Mexico on July 19, 1977, he was Apostolic legate at the Dedication of the Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe Hidalgo on 12 October 1976.

The cardinal died on 15 March 1986 at the age of 90 years in his native city of León, and is buried in the Cathedral of Mexico City.
