Mike Emrick

Mike " Doc" Emrick ( born August 1, 1946 in La Fontaine, Indiana) is an American sportscaster who works for NBC and Versus. From 1990 to 2011 he also worked as a commentator for the New Jersey Devils hockey team of the National Hockey League.

Career

Mike Emrick studied at Manchester College, the specialist Speech (English speech ) and graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor's degree from. Then he went to the Miami University, where he finished the studies in radio and television in 1969 with the Master and subsequently for two years at Geneva College in the subjects taught speech and broadcasting. At this time, he also gained first experience in reporting in the sport of ice hockey, as he reported as an unpaid newspaper correspondent for the Beaver County Times about the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League NHL.

In 1973 he took up the post as Director of Public Relations at Hockey Team Port Huron Flags of the second-rate International Hockey League. In parallel, he continued his studies at Bowling Green State University where he received his PhD in 1976 in the field of radio, television and film studies. A year later he was live commentary of the Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League before he was allowed to work three years later for the first time in the high-class National Hockey League.

He spent his first two years with the Philadelphia Flyers, before starting the season 1982/83 commented on the Games of the New Jersey Devils. There followed in 1986 a change to the national sports channel ESPN, and he worked there as well as a live commentator. He left the station but after two years and returned to Philadelphia back to comment on the games of the Flyers, so he became the " voice of the Philadelphia Flyers ."

After five years in Philadelphia Emrick be closed again in 1993 to the television crew of the New Jersey Devils and is still the live commentator for the games of New Jersey. In addition to his involvement with the regional coverage of the Devils, he has been used in national broadcasts of NHL games also from channels like CBS, FOX, ESPN, ABC and CSTV and commented currently in national broadcasts of the NBC television network as well as in the playoffs for the cable channel Versus. Besides his work in the NHL hockey commentator, he was also at the Winter Olympics.

Even in other sports commented Emrick. From 1992 to 1993 he worked in the National Football League, was used in live reports of lacrosse and basketball and reported during the 2008 summer Olympic Games from water polo.

For his reporting in the sport of ice hockey Mike Emrick received the National CableACE Award and five New York Emmy Awards. Lester Patrick Trophy 2004, he was awarded for outstanding services around the sport of ice hockey in the United States and in the NHL. In November 2008, he was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame with the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstanding service in the field of hockey coverage.

On 21 July 2011 Emrick was the end of his 21- year career as a commentator for the New Jersey Devils games known to work exclusively for the networks NBC and Versus can. In 2011 he was honored with induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.
