Mike Stepovich

Michael Anthony Stepovich or Mike Stepovich ( born March 12, 1919 in Fairbanks, Alaska, † February 14, 2014 in San Diego, California ) was an American politician ( Republican), who was from 1957 to 1958 Governor of Alaska Territory. He was paternal Montenegrin, and mother of Croatian descent.

Career

Stepovich graduated from Notre Dame Law School. Then he married in 1947 Matilda Stepovich. He he represented 1951-1952 the 4th district in the territorial House of Representatives from Alaska, and from 1953 to 1958 in the territorial Senate. Stepovich was 1957-1958 Governor of the Alaska Territory. Then he ran in 1958 for a U.S. Senate seat, said he suffered a defeat. It was also during his candidacy for the governorship in 1962 and in the Republican primaries for the governorship in 1966. Stepovich 1964 was a delegate at the Republican National Convention of Alaska.

Family

One of his children is Nick Stepovich (* 1958). He is also the father of former NBA basketball player John Stockton.
