Mikhail Chyhir

Nikolaevič Čigir '

Mikhail Tschyhir ( born May 24, 1948 in Ussawa, Kapylski rayon, Minsk Woblasz, Byelorussian SSR, Soviet Union) is a Belarusian politician.

Training

Mikhail Tschyhir studied at the Belarusian State Institute of Economics Sciences until 1970. 1982 he completed further studies at the Faculty of Foreign Economic Relations from the Moscow Institute of Financial Science.

Career as a banker

From 1970 to 1971 Tschyhir worked in a branch of the State Bank of the USSR in Salihorsk ( Woblast Minsk). From 1971 to 1972 he headed the credit department of the State Bank branch in Berasino ( Woblast Minsk) and then stepped to his military service.

In 1983, Tschyhir to Minsk, where he was again initially worked for the local department of the Soviet State Bank in various capacities. Later he moved to Agroprombank.

Political activity

Tschyhir began his political career as the first Belarusian Prime Minister under President Alexander Lukashenko elected in 1994. As early as 1996, however, he resigned and criticized on this occasion the President sharp for its authoritarian style of leadership. After his resignation Tschyhir first moved to Moscow, where he worked for a European company.

In 1999 he returned to Belarus and ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in 2001 and in 2000 in the parliamentary elections. The target of his political activity he called an elimination of the authoritarian regime.

Shortly after Tschyhirs return from Moscow began law enforcement investigations against him. Among other things it tax evasion and abuse of his official powers were accused. After years of litigation, he was finally sentenced in July 2002 to a prison term and a repayment of the financial damage caused.
