The width of the bridge at the level of the roadway is 6.1 m, the clear height for vehicles amounts to 5.1 m. This bridge is located on the shortest route between Indianapolis and Lexington, Kentucky.

History

The construction of the bridge was commissioned in 1928 and completed in 1929 attack that cost was U.S. $ 1,365,101.84. Was opened to traffic in the building on December 20, 1929. Up to 1 November 1947, a toll was levied for the use.

The bridge was renovated in 1997 after a 1995 study on the location of a new building came to no result. The renewal measures costing ten million U.S. dollars.

Future

There are still plans to replace the bridge with a new building because the current bridge does not meet the demands of the market and the technical condition is insufficient. Today's trucks are not allowed to use the bridge. A Planning Commission, the Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project Commission also plans to build new bridges between Louisville and Jeffersonville and Utica, except this new building.

The Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet have given in August 2008 a study. The plans must take into account that the historic center of Madison is classified as a National Historic Landmark.
