Ministry of National Defence and Sport (Austria)

The as Federal Ministry of Defence and Sports (short BMLVS or Defense ) called Austrian administration federal institution is responsible for all military matters, in particular the Austrian Armed Forces in question, and all matters of sport responsible.

Federal Minister

In the presently reigning government Faymann II is Gerald Klug ( SPÖ) Minister of Defence and Sports. As such, he is department head of the Department of Sport and superior of all the BMLVS subordinate authorities. He therefore is responsible for the command and control over the Austrian Armed Forces, unless this is reserved to the President. For certain legal acts, such as the attraction of more than 5,000 men of the militia or reserve, the Federal Minister of Defence is subject to the authorization of the President, as this leads the constitutional command of the army.

Competencies

The Ministry is responsible in particular for:

  • Affairs of the procurement of the constitutionally specified tasks of the armed

Controlling body of the armed forces is the National Security Council, which is based at the Federal Chancellery. The Secretary of Defense - in addition Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Foreign Minister, Interior Minister, Minister of Justice and some Member of Parliament / Federal Council members - participants in this forum (until 2001: National Defence for military, now responsible for the entire civil protection).

As a sports ministry is responsible particularly for competitive sports and sports tourism, school sport and physical activity is still one of the agendas of the Ministry of Education ( Division II / 8 BMUKK - Exercise and Sport )

Historical development

At the time of the Austro -Hungarian Empire was a Habsburg War Department, which was responsible for the entire monarchy, and a kk Ministry of Defence, which served only the Austrian half of the empire, furnished. From 1918 to 1920 there was a state Office of Military Affairs, 1920-1936, a German Federal Ministry of Military Affairs, from 1936 to 1938 was called the Authority Ministry of Defence. During the period of membership of the Greater German Reich no separate Austrian authority existed. From 1945 to 1956, ie in the time of the alien controlled by the occupying powers, Republic of Austria, the agendas of national defense were not for the Office for National Defence, a section in the Federal Chancellery.
