With Karl May in the East is the title of a six -part television series by Roman motifs from the works of Karl May, which was sent in 1963 by the German channel ZDF.

In the series were motifs from the Orient cycle " Through the Desert ", " Through the wild Kurdistan ", " From Baghdad to Istanbul ," " In the Gorges of the Balkans", " Through the land of Skipetars " and " Der Schut " processed.

The six episodes were given the title

Based on a screenplay by Winfried Schnitzler turned director Francesco Stefani with a modest budget in 1961 on location in Yugoslavia, even before there many of the Karl May movies of the 1960s emerged. The production directed the later Oscar winner Arthur Cohn (The Garden of the Finzi Contini, 1970). The series parts were shot on 35mm film.

The television premiere of the first part, " Kara Ben Nemsi " took place, during the experimental program of the ZDF at the IFA in Berlin on 2 October 1963.

Actually, 13 parts were planned for the series. However, the resonance and criticism of the viewers on the broadcast six episodes in the experimental program was so catastrophic that the ZDF renounced both the production of other parts, as well as repeating the series later in the television channel. A kind of " world premiere " therefore experienced the first two parts of the series, as they were listed on April 2, 2000 at the Star Theater in Göttingen.

The cast included as Kara Ben Nemsi from the Karl -May- performances in Bad Segeberg known Harry Walther and Hajji Halef Omar Osman Ragheb, who in spoof " Manitou's Shoe " synchronized the role of the chief Wily Lurch later.
