Hadschi Halef Omar

Hajji Halef Omar Ben Hadji Abul Abbas Ibn Hadji Davuhd al Gossarah is a fictional character that appears in various adventure novels by Karl May. It is by Winnetou and Old Shatterhand one of the most famous characters from Karl May's works and occurs predominantly in the gambling in the Ottoman Empire Orient novels. In particular, Hajji Halef Omar plays a role in the first six volumes of Mays collected traveler's tales, the so-called "Orient cycle ".

Person

Halef, as he is commonly called, is the constant companion of the narrator Kara Ben Nemsi on its perilous journeys across the Ottoman Empire. Initially, only valiant servant Kara Ben Nemsis, Halef is in the course of the various novels becoming a loyal companion and friend. In parallel, his social advancement from a simple Bedouin initially runs a respected member of the tribe to Sheik of Haddedihn the great tribe of the Shammar.

After Halef initially tried Kara Ben Nemsi dissuade from Christianity, it is possible that by his actions to convince Halef gradually by the permission of his Christian thinking and acting way. At the end of the trip Halef is " only appear on a Muslim " and occurs later and his family officially converted to Christianity, but without thereby losing its status in the root of Haddedhin.

Unlike in America novels where the narrator Old Shatterhand and his blood brother Winnetou both " superheroes " are Halef is a figure with several weaknesses that make the hero Kara Ben Nemsi shine in all the brighter light. Small and slight of stature, but of all the greater bravery, often acting rashly and yet full of ingenuity and cunning, Halef is a loveable guy whose biggest weakness is his penchant for cutting up and to boast of. Even altruism and anti- materialism are less pronounced than with his Lord Kara Ben Nemsi at Halef Omar. Mostly he accomplishes his good deeds mainly because of the prospect of a baksheesh.

An exception to this status as a true brave, but physically and in terms of skill fallible warrior learns Halef in the band " On Beyond ". As in other volumes Kara Ben Nemsi also leads there Halef several times to the failures in mind. However, Kara Ben Nemsi has in reliance on Halef now perfected skills in combat no objection, as Halef logs to a duel against a Bedouin. In earlier volumes Kara Ben Nemsi doubts about the martial skills Halef. In May's late work ( In the Realm of the Silver Lion III / IV, Ardistan and Dschinnistan ) Halef is increasingly becoming a symbol of the compulsive personality component "Anima", which still requires finishing.

Furthermore Halef love for his wife Hanneh is characteristic of him. He describes and always praises her in a very flowery way. It also brings to their son Kara Ben Halef to the world, which plays a significant role in later novels.

The term refers to a Haji Muslim who has made the pilgrimage ( hajj ) to Mecca in the Quran as per the prescribed manner. The long name also points out that both Halef Omar himself and his father Abul Abbas and his grandfather Davuhd al Gossarah in Mecca were. When Kara Ben Nemsi Through the Desert Halef get to know the band, Halef must admit, however, that neither he nor his ancestors were ever in Mecca, and he so far only could call Halef Omar himself. However, in the course of the trip he visited along with Kara Ben Nemsi Mecca so that he may be called from this point on to Haji law. On the occasion Halef also met his wife Hanneh that he only married only in appearance, so that they can also visit Mecca, which is only married women allowed. However, the two fall into each other then, and since Halef has also acquired merit for the tribe in the meantime, the Hanneh party, he does not need to give away again she.
