Mizil

Mizil is a town in Prahova County in the Great Wallachia in Romania.

Location

Mizil is on the edge of the Wallachian Plain, at the southern end of the Eastern Carpathians. The county seat Ploieşti is located about 35 km southwest of Mizil away.

History

The existence of a place on the territory of the city is mentioned in documents since 1529; 1585 documented the designation Eşteu. The present city name, which prevailed in the 18th century, derives from the Turkish and meant about " postal service ". End of the 17th century, the place belonged to the Wallachian prince Constantin Brâncoveanu. Long only a small place, located Mizil developed in the 18th century due to its location on a trade route in the middle between the more important cities of Ploieşti and Buzău to a local commercial center. 1830 Mizil was declared a city. After the end of World War II until the administrative reform of 1968, it was the seat of a Rajons, a small administrative unit. The main industries are the textile and furniture industries, agriculture, viticulture and trade.

Population

1912 were registered 6,358 inhabitants. By 1992, the population rose to 17,090. 2002 in Mizil 15,760 inhabitants registered, including 13,780 Romanians, 1,951 Roma and 14 German.

Traffic

Mizil has a station on the important route Bucharest Buzau. Through the city of Ploiesti National Road 1B goes according to Buzau.

Attractions

  • The Trinity Church Sf. Treime, late 18th early 19th century, built by Nicolae Polcovnicu Stamboleanu in the cadastral Fefelei. The church in the form of a cross with its Byzantine and gothic styles with many elements of the Renaissance dominates the city center of Mizil. The paintings of the church was destroyed in 1940 by an earthquake, have been renewed.
