History

The town originated in the mid-13th century as unpaved market town on the site of an older settlement. It belonged to the rule of the Cistercian monastic house in the neighboring monastery Hradiště Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou. The first record dates from 1279. The monastery was destroyed in the spring of 1420 by the Orebiten and never rebuilt. The possessions went to the Catholic nobleman John of Wartemberg. Around 1440 the Hussite general, Jan Čapek ze Sán came into the possession of the city and the surrounding estates with the proceeds from erbuntertänigen villages. Below Mnichovo Hradiště was pledged several times. The Bohemian Chamber sold the rule in 1556 to the nobleman George of Labouň and Jindřich Žibřid. The Descendants Zibřids sold town and estate in 1582 to Christoph Budovec Budova, whose son Václav Budovec Budova a manor house was built in the village. He was executed as one of the leaders of the uprising in Bohemia ( 1618) after the Battle of White Mountain on June 21, 1621 at Old Town Square in Prague. His property was confiscated in 1623 to the imperial commander Albrecht von Wallenstein. After his assassination in 1634 the city and rule Mnichovo Hradiště were confiscated again and given to Wallenstein's cousin Max von Waldstein. In the 17th century the castle was generously rebuilt and remained until 1945 owned by the Waldstein family.
