61MP project, referred to by NATO as Kashin - Mod class, is a variant of the destroyer type project 61, the Soviet Union had originally developed for submarine hunting. Unlike its predecessor, Project 61MP was also armed for the fight against surface ships with cruise missiles. Five ships of the class were exported to India, where they are as a Rajput class still in use today.

History

In five of the eleven -built ships of this class is not about new buildings, but modified to ships of Kashin class. The first ship in 1971, passed after the overhaul as Kashin - Mod to the Northern Fleet. Four other ships were overhauled 1973-1981. In 1973, the first "new" ship of Kashin - Mod class was put into service. Another five ships were built, but probably as still modified variant (Project 61ME ). However, they were not sold during the construction of India, where they have been continually modernized and today stand as Rapjut class in service.

Differences in construction

Arming

Fundamental change was a stronger anti-ship weaponry, and the installation of an effective CIWS against incoming missiles. For the ship combat four single starter for anti-ship missiles of the type P-15 Termit ( NATO Code: SS-N -2 " Styx " ) were installed. The four starters are between mid-fuselage and tail, the missile will be launched backwards. The four Gatling -type AK -630 were installed amidships, but for the two RBU -1000 had to be removed. The remaining armament remained unchanged.

Hull

The hull remained unchanged, except for the extension of 2 m substantially. Only the water displacement took again to several tons. Since no new drive system was installed, this should also be the main reason for the loss of speed of 3-5 knots. However, the range remained at a speed of 18 knots at about 3,500 nautical miles.

Structures

The structures were hardly changed. The biggest difference made here, the various radar and fire control systems to become the new armament. In addition still had space to be created in order to install the Gatling can. At this point the two RBU -1000 were replaced, since the main structures should be widened to bring the four turrets.

Preparedness

In the Russian Navy the Kashin - Mod class has now been decommissioned; the last ship of the class was withdrawn in 2001 from the Black Sea Fleet. One of the ships was in 1988 sold to the Polish Navy, where it stood until 2003 on active duty. Presumably it is still in reserve. The sold to India five ships are all still in service.
