Mohamed Ghannouchi

Mohamed Ghannouchi (Arabic: محمد الغنوشي Muhammad al- Ghanuschi, DMG Muḥammad al - Ġanūšī; born August 18, 1941 in Sousse, Tunisia) is a Tunisian economist and politician.

In 1966 he received a degree in economics at the University of Tunis. During his studies he was an intern at the French Ministry of Finance. In 1975 he became director of the Tunisian Ministry of Planning, 1982, the Director General. In 1987 he was appointed Secretary of State in the Ministry. After the coup, he was Minister in 1988 under the new president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. In 1989 he also took over the Ministry of Finance, a year later, he was Economic and Finance. In 1992 he became Minister for International Cooperation, and thus responsible for the cooperation with the European Union, the IMF and the World Bank, in 1999 then Prime Minister.

From 2008 until his departure in January 2011, he was Deputy Chairman of the Tunisian ruling party RCD.

From 14 to 15 January 2011, he was in addition to the Office of the Prime Minister Executive President as the previous President Ben Ali had resigned due to ongoing protests and fled abroad. On 15 January 2011 the Tunisian Constitutional Council continued the speaker of parliament, Fouad Mebazaâ as the acting President.

On January 17, Ghannouchi presented a government of national unity, which also includes three ministers from former opposition parties. This Tunisian transitional government to lead the country until the scheduled elections and initiate the transformation into a democracy.
