Hamed Karoui

Hamed Karoui ( born December 30, 1927 in Sousse ) is a Tunisian politician and former prime minister.

After studying medicine in France with his doctorate, he later worked as a lung specialist at the regional hospital of Sousse. Later, he began his political career as mayor of his home town of Sousse, which he represented as a deputy in the Parliament.

From 8 July 1986 to October 2, 1987 he was Minister of Youth and Sports in the cabinet of Rachid Sfar. After the coup of Zine el- Abidine Ben Ali on 7 November, 1987, which led to the overthrow of long-time president Habib Bourguiba, he is Minister of Justice.

On 27 September 1989 Karoui was appointed by President Zine el- Abidine Ben Ali as the successor of Hedi Baccouche prime minister. On 17 November 1999 he was replaced as Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi from. With over ten years of reign Karoui was so far the incumbent 's second longest Prime Minister of the Republic of Tunisia.

Karoui is currently First Vice-President of the " Democratic Constitutional Démocratique " (RCD ), whose central committee he belongs since 1988.

For many years he also served as President of the football club Étoile Sportive du Sahel.
