History

At the time of its opening on October 1, 1908 as the widened former mouth of the Moor Street was the former Metro Station " Kaiserhof " under two distinctive Berlin city squares, namely west under the bordering on the Wilhelmstrasse Wilhelmplatz and east under the Zietenplatz (on the Wilhelmplatz since mid-19th century was called ). Received its name from the nearby railway station here on the corner of William and place Zietenplatz " Kaiserhof ", then one of the most luxurious hotels in Berlin. Originally the station the name William place should be given, but there was already a station with this name in Charlottenburg, which has been called since 1935, Richard -Wagner-Platz and since 1978 is on the U7.

Due to the former settlement of large hotels and some ministries in the immediate vicinity of the station they put great value to its architectural design. The architect was Alfred Grenander, who laid the train station with white walls and black tiles as a characteristic color.

Wilhelm course was redesigned by the Nazis occasion of the 1936 Olympic Games. To make room for parades, one down most the lime trees and lawns on the court, and the distinctive pergola entrance of the subway station at its center was replaced by a plain, scaled-down version.

During World War II, the station was largely destroyed. Political and urban -related changes since the Second World War several renaming of the station. The first took place on August 18, 1950, with walls, columns, fixtures and benches were covered with " marble hall Burger " in the Royal red variety. Various sources claim that the material came from the ruined Reich Chancellery, this is now, however, as not applicable. The material was obtained in the hall Burger break in Thuringia. A year after the renaming of Wilhelmplatz in " Thälmannplatz " after the former chairman of the KPD Ernst Thalmann also the station was renamed accordingly. Since the modern building at the Otto- Grotewohl road (such as the Wilhelmstrasse since September 1964 was called ) the earlier court system but gradually had to disappear and to confusion with the consecrated 1986 residential Ernst- Thalmann Park in Prenzlauer to avoid mountain, they gave the designation " Thälmannplatz " on the now de facto western end of the Mohrenstrasse narrowed area. Since 15 April 1986, the station of the road contributed to reflect the new name "Otto Grote well -Straße".

The subway station was the terminus of the then underground line A. The station Potsdamer Platz (just below the border fortifications ) was thus during the existence of the Berlin Wall more than three and Buelowstrasse ( in West Berlin) more than two decades, not in operation.

Since the first anniversary of the reunification (3 October 1991) is the name of metro station " Mohrenstrasse ". This renaming allowed the then Transport Senator removing a name from the socialist era, without having a return appointment of Otto Grotewohl Street, which took place only in 1993, wait. Since 13 November 1993, the underground is again continuously over Mohrenstrasse addition, Potsdamer Platz and toward reversing triangle.
