Monday Michiru

Monday Michiru Sipiagin (born Mariano, known by the stage name Monday Michiru ( Monday jap満ちる), rarely as Michiru Akiyoshi (秋吉 満ちる, Akiyoshi Michiru ), born August 19, 1963 in Tokyo, Japan ) is a Japanese-American singer, songwriter and actress. Their music covers a wide range of styles, such as jazz, funk, dance, pop and soul. It is regarded as one of the pioneers in the field of acid jazz movement in Japan in the early 1990s, although it has evolved into its own style music.

Life and career

Monday was born in Tokyo, the daughter of jazz pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and jazz saxophonist Charlie Mariano, whose marriage was later divorced. They took an early interest in music. At the age of eight she began ballet and modern dance to learn, they also played the flute for eight years. While she attended the Interlochen Arts Academy, she discovered her passion for singing. Her debut as a singer she had as a thirteen- year-old in a short sequence on Toshiko Akiyoshis album Insights.

In 1987 she had the leading role in the Japanese movie Hikaru Onna ( in the credits she is listed as Michiru Akiyoshi ). Mondays accidental acting career developed only right when she received the Kinema Jumpo Prize and the Japanese Academy Award for Best Young Actress, and was also honored at the Yokohama Film Festival. Due to this success they achieved fame and was frequently seen in commercials and also commonly on television.

In 1991, she again focused more on the music and released her debut album Mangetsu. In addition to her work as a solo artist, she had also been works of many other musicians, for example, Basement Jaxx, Mondo Grosso and DJ Krush.

Followed by a further twelve albums, many compilations, remix albums and several singles on their debut.

Monday is currently living in New York ( USA) with her husband, jazz trumpeter Alex Sipiagin, and her son Nikita.
