Monegros
Los Monegros ( Aragonese Os Monegros ) is a Comarca (administrative unit ) of the Aragon Autonomous Community in Spain. It is located in the northern center of the region each part in the provinces of Zaragoza (municipalities Bujaraloz Farlete, La Almolda, Leciñena, Monegrillo and Perdiguera ) and Huesca (the other municipalities). The comarca has an area of 2764.9 km ² 20,633 inhabitants. Seat of the district is Sariñena, the largest city among the 31 associated municipalities ( municipios ). The name originated from the contraction of the old name " Montes Negros " (engl. Black Mountain Forest). This was due to the growth of the area with pine trees before they were cut down and the Habitat converted to steppe.
The Comarca is bordered to the north by the Hoya de Huesca, in the east on Somontano de Barbastro, Cinca Medio and Bajo Cinca, in the west of the comarca of Saragossa, and on the south by Ribera Baja del Ebro and Bajo Aragón - Caspe.
The associated communities, in addition to Sariñena Albalatillo, Albero Bajo, Alberuela de Tubo, Alcubierre, La Almolda, Almuniente, Barbués, Bujaraloz Capdesaso, Castejón de Monegros, Castelflorite, Farlete, Grañén, Huerto, Lalueza, Lanaja, Leciñena, Monegrillo, Peñalba, Perdiguera, Poleñino, Robres, Sangarrén, Sena, Senés de Alcubierre, Tardienta Torralba de Aragón, Torres de Barbués, Valfarta and Villanueva de Sigena.
The topography of the Sierra de Alcubierre be emphasized that pervades the Comarca from northwest to southeast. The highest elevation is the Monte Oscuro with 822M. The climate is semi-arid with low rainfall and high temperatures in summer. In the province there are many salt lakes and ponds that form the Complejo Endorréico Bujaraloz - Sástago, the largest endorheic lakes system in Europe. The salt lakes of Sariñena and Playa deserve special mention. The barren scenery served as a filming location for Bigas Luna's award-winning feature film Jamón, jamón (1992).
Under the cultural heritage of the province of the (former) monasteries Monasterio de Sigena project in the Romanesque style and the Cartuja de las Fuentes, a Carthusian monastery from the 18th century, out.
Over the next ten years is to be built in the barren landscape of the entertainment and casino parking Gran Scala, which is being built by the UK-based International Leisure Development.
