Monte Rua

The Monte Rua is one of the Euganean hills in the Veneto province of Padua. It is located in the Natural Park of the hill on the territory of the municipality Torreglia. There is a hermitage of Camaldoli, at its summit.

Infrastructure

From Torreglias historic district Torreglia Alta 132 m high a narrow road leads up through the chestnut woods to the grille in front of the hermitage. Halfway up is a restaurant with a wide panoramic terrace in the northeastern Euganean thermal spas Abano Terme with the region and Abano Terme, on clear days to Padua. Another, slightly elevated vantage point ( Belvedere della Croce ) opens the view to southeast over Galzignano Terme, Battaglia Terme away to Monselice and beyond in the plane towards Chioggia.

Camaldolese hermitage

The hermitage was originally a Benedictine monastery, which was founded in 1339 by two Camaldolese hermit in honor of the Annunciation. The first wooden building was replaced by a stone after 1537 and received during these renovations distinctive, essentially maintained until today form. In addition to the single-nave church ( built in 1542 ) there are common rooms ( refectory, chapter house and youth hostel - foresteria ) and 14 monastic cells (combined bedroom and study) in small detached houses; in between fruit and vegetable gardens that are ordered by the monks. After secularization by Napoleon in the wake of the sinking of the Republic of Venice, the system was broke; In 1863 it was colonized again by Camaldolese. Today, approximately a dozen friars are only left.

The hermitage is surrounded by a 1.4 km long wall, which can hike. The access to the interior is only permitted men at certain times and only for the purpose of worship visit.
