Morbihan

The department of Morbihan [ mɔʀbiɑ ] ( Breton: Mor - Bihan [ morbi ˑ On] ) is a French department of atomic number 56 It is in the northwest of the country in the Brittany region and is named after the Morbihan Gulf, Mor - Bihan is the Breton Name of the Gulf ( " small sea ").

Geography

Morbihan is located in the south of Brittany and on the west by the department of Finistère, on the north by the department of Côtes- d'Armor, in the north- east by the department of Ille -et -Vilaine and in the southeast on the department of Loire- Atlantique Pays de la Region Loire.

The Gulf of Morbihan is separated by the peninsulas of Locmariaquer and Rhuys from the Atlantic Ocean.

Prehistory

The Morbihan was one of the cultural focal points in the Neolithic of Western Europe. In addition to the other regions of Brittany, it represents the beginning of megalithic construction in Europe. This developed from the mounds ( tumuli ) the cairn, which led BC with the acquired when erecting huge menhirs skills in the 5th millennium for the construction of megaliths in combination.

Traffic

As is common in Brittany, Morbihan is not accessible from highways but by highway-like developed and toll-free highways. Main traffic arteries are the east- west link N24 Rennes - Ploërmel - Lorient, the coastal route N165 Nantes - Vannes - Lorient - Quimper ( - Brest ) and the branching off of the N24 north-south cross-link N166 Ploërmel - Vannes.

Main rail link is the distance from Quimper over Lorient and Vannes, which is divided in already in the department of Ille -et -Vilaine Redon Rennes and Nantes. About the stations Lorient, Auray and Vannes Morbihan which is connected to the French TGV network ( route Quimper - Rennes - Paris). On the main line also run Intercités trains on the line Quimper - Nantes - Bordeaux. The regional rail passenger transport is carried out by the TER Bretagne, which compresses the traffic on the main line, operated smaller breakpoints and offers a seasonal traffic from Auray to Quiberon peninsula.

The Réseau des Transports du Morbihan Interurbains (TIM ) provides for the non-local bus service, greater local bus networks exist in the agglomerations of Lorient ( CTRL) and Vannes ( TPV).

The only commercial airport in the department is Lorient Bretagne Sud. More important for the department of airports are Rennes and Nantes Atlantique.
