Moritz von Schwind

Moritz Ludwig von Schwind ( born January 21, 1804 in Vienna, † February 8, 1871 in Niederpöcking, Upper Bavaria ) was an Austrian painter and draftsman.

Life

Moritz von Schwind was one of six children of the royal secretary in the Secret Chancellery Franz Edler von Schwind and his wife Frances of wood master, a Councilor daughter. He attended the Scots College in Vienna, where Nicholas Lenau and Edward were of Farmer Field classmates, and then began studying at the university. Actually, he would like his father to be official, but from 1821 he studied with Johann Peter Krafft and Ludwig Ferdinand Schnorr von Carol Field at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In his time in Vienna he was a friend of Franz Schubert, Franz von Schober, Leopold Kupelwieser and Franz Grillparzer. In 1828 he moved to the advice of Peter Cornelius back to Munich, which gives him an order for the painting of the library room of the Bavarian Queen with scenes from Ludwig Tieck's seal. After a trip to Italy in 1835, he created designs for the Munich Residenz and in the Castle Hohenschwangau, the latter scenes from the life of Charlemagne showing, implemented by Franz Xaver Glink. Orders from Saxony and Baden followed, making him known.

In the years 1840-1844 he lived and Moritz von Schwind worked in Karlsruhe. Here he met his wife Luise Sachs, the daughter of Major, know. He immortalized in his famous picture " The Honeymoon ". In Karlsruhe, he created eight round medallions for the boardroom of the Karlsruhe stands the house and decorated the staircase and the ground-floor halls of the State Art Gallery with frescoes.

1844 to 1847 he worked at the Städel School in Frankfurt. There he built in 1845 the shrinkage house in the Bockenheimer conditioning, a villa of my own design in forms of romantic classicism. The parapets are decorated with terracottas own design.

In 1847 he became professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Teaching assignments in Frankfurt am Main and Munich closed over mediation Franz von Schober the Order of the Hereditary Grand Duke of Weimar in to take over the painting restored the Wartburg in Eisenach. The 1854/55 created murals on the Wartburg - for example, the " Singers' " - are among his best known works. The paintings depict moments from the Thuringian history, particularly the life of Elizabeth of Thuringia. In 1855 he was raised along with his brothers August ( Ministerial ) and Franz ( Bergrat ) to knighthood. His cartons he was able to export to Glasgow and London. 1866/67 he worked on the decoration of the newly Vienna Court Opera in the later so-called " Schwind Foyer ". In the loggia frescoes are Schwind, depicting scenes from Mozart's " Magic Flute " in the foyer of such works by other composers. Schwind's late work, which was intended as an ornament of a round temple " Melusines Cycle" and was completed six months before his death. These pictures are exhibited in the Austrian Gallery.

Moritz von Schwind was buried in the South Cemetery in Munich.

Work

Moritz von Schwind, who was under the influence of Peter von Cornelius and his monumental style to one that is characterized by generosity and a few figures, was alongside Carl Spitzweg the most important and most popular painters of the late German romanticism. His paintings on themes of German legends and fairy tales are designed popularly and poetically. In addition to oil painting he created of importance in the fresco painting and book illustration. He also created many templates for the Munich picture sheet.

Honors

The Schwind street in Frankfurt am Main is named after Moritz von Schwind. In 1874, in Vienna Wieden ( 4th district ) has been named the Schwindgasse after him. In Niederpöcking there is the Moritz von Schwind - way.

A 1909 created by Othmar Schimkowitz monument in Vienna was destroyed in 1945 and will not be restored.
