Moroccan Grand Prix

The Grand Prix of Morocco was held 1932-1958 seven times. Only once, in 1958 in the Ain - Diab Circuit near the city of Casablanca, the Grand Prix was part of the Formula 1 World Championship.

History

Already 1925-1928 Grand Prix of Morocco had already been held in Casablanca; the official name for this was Casablanca Grand Prix.

From 1930 onwards ( with the exception of 1933) similar races were held at the new Anfa race track (the official name was now Anfa Grand Prix), costing Count Bruno d' Harcourt in one of the training runs life. All winners of this sports car races were either French or Monegasque.

After 1935-1953 no races were run, the Grand Prix in 1954 returned again as a sports car race in the vicinity of the city of Agadir back. This time was won by Italian Giuseppe Farina and thereby broke the first time the dominance of French riders in the Grand Prix of Morocco.

In Ain - Diab, near Casablanca, a new route for the 1957 Formula 1 season was built. Although it was held a race, but this was not considered a World Championship race.

Formula 1

The following year, an official world championship race was held on 19 October, which was overshadowed by the fatal accident of the Vanwall drivers Stuart Lewis -Evans ( second in the 1957 race ). Lewis -Evans died in a London hospital after he had suffered on the dusty track in a serious accident. The overall winner of the only official F1 GP of Morocco, the Briton Stirling Moss went down in the annals of motorsport.
