Mount Tyree

Mount Tyree is after the 13 km northwest of him distant Mount Vinson ( 4897m ) the second highest mountain in Antarctica.

Mount Tyree was discovered in January 1958 with a reconnaissance flight of the U.S. Navy VX -6 Squadron. In the same month he was charted by the Marie Byrd Traverse Party country. The mountain was named after Rear Admiral David M. Tyree, Commander of the U.S. Naval Support Force, Antarctica from April 14, 1959 to 26 November 1962. He could be climbed by members of an expedition led by Nicolas clinch the first time in 1967. The same expedition also get the first ascent of Mount Vinson, Mount Shinn and Mount Gardner. This expedition had thus climbed the four highest mountains in the Antarctic. The Mount Long Gables and Mount Ostenso still get two more first ascents.

The second-highest mountain of his continent of Mount Tyree is one of the Seven Second Summits. Like almost all of these mountains, he is considered more difficult to climb than its higher counterpart, the Mount Vinson.
