Moura (Queensland)

Moura is a small town of about 1,800 residents in the Australian state of Queensland. Moura is located 171 km south of Rockhampton and 589 kilometers north of Brisbane on the Dawson Highway. The city is located in the administrative area ( LGA) Banana Shire.

In 1854, Charles Marshall has here called his private property Moura, according to the Portuguese town of Moura in which he had served during his time with the British Army. Edward Homer then erected in 1880 on this piece of land a farm called Moura Homestead. Later in 1936 was finally founded nearby this Court the city.

In addition to cattle, cotton and grain cultivation, the city lives mainly from the nearby coal mine. The name of the mine changes with each new owner, currently (as of 2011 ) is called the Mine Dawson and operated by the company Anglo Coal.

Over time, there was this underground to three mine accidents:

  • The first was the Kiange mining disaster. On September 20, 1975 an explosion rocked the tunnel from Kianga number 1 and 13 miners were killed.
  • The second, on 16 July, 1986, also an explosion occurred at Moura No. 4 and demanded killed 12 people.
  • The third misfortune exploded on 7 August 1994, the Mine Moura Number 2 All rescue attempts were discontinued after a second, even more violent explosion occurred 18 hours later. Eleven people lost their lives. The mine was closed after the incident on the surface.

Since 1994, one works only here in the open pit.
