The Midnatsol is (Norwegian for "Midnight Sun" ) a passenger and ro-ro ship of the Hurtigruten ASA. It is used on the Hurtigruten along the Norwegian coast in regular service. The ship entered service in 2003 offers 1,000 passengers.

For the fourth ship in the Hurtigruten insert carries the name Midnatsol. Your name direct predecessor at the Hurtigruten was later under the name " Lyngen " in scheduled service in use.

History

Construction and commissioning

The Midnatsol, which was laid on 17 October 2001 with hull number 73 of the shipyard Bruce Verkstad A / B in Landskrona (Sweden) to Kiel, is the fourth ship on the Hurtigruten, which carries this name. She is the sister ship of the Trollfjord, which went into service in 2002. In order to use the Mitnatsol also as a military hospital ship, the Norwegian Navy participated with approximately 6.5 million crowns in the construction of the ship. The official launch of the Midnatsol took place on 26 April 2002. Then it was completed at the shipyard Fosen Mekaniske Verksteder AS in Rissa (Norway ) and placed on 11 March 2003 for the shipping company Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap A / S ( TFDS ) in service. The naming ceremony took place on 22 March 2003 in Hamburg harbor, the godmother was Rut Brandt.

Use

On 14 April 2003, the Midnatsol took to the scheduled use on the Hurtigruten from Bergen to Kirkenes. In early 2006 it was moved to Savona ( Italy), where it was used as a hotel ship. After the takeover of the ship by the shipping company Hurtigruten ASA, it was in November 2006 - again as a hotel ship - chartered to Norsk Hydro. On 14 January 2007, the Midnatsol returned into service.

Machinery and drive

The machinery of the Midnatsol consists of two nine-cylinder diesel engines, the Wärtsilä 32 series, acting through gear on two rudder propellers of the type Ulstein / Rolls- Royce "Aqua Master Contaz 38 ". The peculiarity of these drive systems are the two successively arranged coaxially with each and counter-rotating 5-blade fixed pitch propeller. To control the ship, the two nacelles can be rotated 360 °, which, combined with the three transverse thrusters in the bow high maneuverability.

Equipment

The ship is registered in the coastal trade for 1000 passengers. This purpose are 650 beds in 304 cabins. For 45 cars parking spaces are available on the ship; the cars can be loaded by a hydraulic loading ramp of the port side.

On board there is everything that makes today a modern passenger ship, next to restaurants, bistros and staging or panoramic salons, there is a gym, sauna and spa as well as two hot tubs on board.
