Muhammad IV of Morocco

Sidi Muhammad IV (* 1803, † September 16, 1873 in Marrakech) was Sultan of the Alawites in Morocco ( 1859-1873 ).

Following in the footsteps of his father Moulay Abd al-Rahman (1822-1859) and his first wife Lalla Fatima, Sultan Sidi Muhammad tried to further strengthen the security of Morocco through the modernization of the army and the expansion of the fortifications. The need had become clear by the defeat of Morocco in the war against Spain ( 1859-1860 ).

However, the modernization of the military was also directed against the restless tribes of Bedouins and Berbers who threatened the country 's population and the cities again and again. This was also a reason that from the mid-19th century, the population in the cities on the Atlantic coast rapidly grew as cities rapidly developed because of the greater security to economic centers. Through the ports of the goods produced in the cities could be easily exported. To promote exports, further agreements were concluded with the European powers. Successor of Sidi Muhammad IV, his son Moulay al -Hassan was I.
