Muhammadu Maccido

Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammadu Maccido Abubakar ( born April 20, 1926 in Dange; † 29 October 2006 Abuja ) was of 21 April 1996 until his death Sultan of Sokoto.

Maccido was the eldest son of the seventeenth Sultan of Sokoto, Siddiq Abu Bakar dan Usuman, who reigned for over fifty years. As was his successor Ibrahim Dasuki from the Nigerian military dictator Sani Abacha detained and expelled, he was finally nineteenth Sultan.

As Sultan of Sokoto Maccido was regarded as the spiritual leader of 70 million Nigerian Muslims. He was also titular head of Sokoto State and head of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. He died, like his son, the Nigerian Senator was, and his grandson in the crash of an aircraft, the ADC Airlines to Sokoto. His successor, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar.
