Municipality of Ajdovščina

Ajdovščina ( German heath shaft, Italian Aidussina ) is a town and municipality in Slovenia. It is located between Nova Gorica and Postojna.

Population

In the overall community consisting of 45 villages and hamlets 18,928 people live. The small town of Ajdovščina alone has 6373 inhabitants.

History

The city was in Roman times a fortified camp with coaching, called Castra and lay on the Via Gemina, an important road to and from Italy, led by Emona (Ljubljana) to Aquileia through the pass of Birnbaumer forest. Before the walls of Castra took place on 6 September in the year 394 the battle of the Frigidus place in the emperor Theodosius I triumphed over his adversary Eugenius.

In 451, the camp was destroyed by the Huns under Attila.

In 1507 Maximilian I granted the settlement the market rights, which gave the city a boost.

1918-1945 was the community under Italian administration and belonged to the province of Gorizia ( 1924-27 the province of Udine ).

Traffic

The city is located on the highway H 4, which connects Nova Gorica with Ljubljana.

Interestingly, the airfield Ajdovščina, which is mainly used by ultralight aircraft and the local manufacturer Pipistrel serves as a factory airfield since 1987.

Twinning

Italian twin town of Ajdovščina is Quiliano in Liguria.
