Municipality of ÄŒair

Čair ( Macedonian Чаир; Albanian Čairi; Turkish Çayır ) is the smallest Opština Macedonia, one of the ten districts of the capital, Skopje. It also houses the historic city center, which was built mostly during the Ottoman period.

It is one of the most touristic areas of the city. Attractive are the old town with its caravanserais, the centuries-old mosques (including the Mustafa Pasha Mosque ), the reconstructed Kale Fortress and the old bazaar.

Geography

Čair is located on the eastern bank of the Vardar River in the northern part of the historic center of Skopje, opposite the new city center. It is bordered to the southwest of the district Centar, west to Karpoš, north of Butel and Gazi Baba the east.

Population

The last census of 2002 show Čair has 64 773 inhabitants. At 18.4 people per square kilometer, it has a very high population density (the highest in Macedonia ) and is home to 3.2 percent of the total Macedonian population.

Among the ethnic groups in the district are an Albanian majority, with 36 921 inhabitants, still 15,628 Macedonians, 4,500 Turks, 3,083 Roma, 2,950 Bosniaks and others.

Language

The official languages ​​in the Opština are Macedonian, Albanian and, since February 26, 2014 also Turkish.
