Geography

The municipality of Münster consists of three districts; Münster itself has about 12,000 inhabitants, of which the east is my finished at 31 December 1971 Altheim of about 3,000 inhabitants, and the northwest of the young, founded in July 1997, the district Breitenfeld with approximately 200 inhabitants.

History

Muenster

The name Münster indicates a foundation in the Frankish or Carolingian period. In ancient records speak of monsters, Munster or Monstere. The word suggests the Latin monasterium, which means as much as the monastery church or " belonging to the monastery ."

In a deed dating from 782 AD to the Lorsch Abbey speaks an abbess Aba from a possession "ad gaspenze " ( the river Gersprenz ). This property is part of a monastery Neuenhof, the Rheingau in the district Raodora ( Roden, Upper and Lower -Roden ) on the river ' Rohada ' ( Rodau ), and she gives the Lorsch Abbey and all its possessions. Maybe Münster was this possession at the Gersprenz.

In a document from the year 1254 Münster is first mentioned. Münster and Werlach came to Solmser line and by succession partly to the widowed Countess Anna of Sayn and partly to the Count of Ysenburg. As of 1486 the Count Dieter von Ysenburg 5/6 of Münster and Werlach owned had. In this document Werlach is mentioned for the last time.

The remaining sixth of Münster and Werlach, which came in turn by succession to the Counts of Hanau -Lichtenberg, was ceded by exchange in 1684 to Electoral Mainz. Mainz exchanged in 1706 this part of Munster to Ysenburg, which was now in complete possession of Münster. On December 31, 1971 Altheim was voluntarily incorporated within the framework of municipal reform in Hesse in the municipality of Münster.

Breitenfeld (formerly Muenster Depot)

The small village on the former Munster Depot was founded in July 1997 decision of the municipal council of Munster.

Mayor

The Mayor of Münster called Walter Blank and belongs to the Christian Democratic Union. The first councilor of the municipality is since September 2008 Norbert Schewe. Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Münster is a combination of the Hanau swan and two black stripes, the seal of the Earl of Ysenburg. The municipality used it from 1684 as a court seal, since 1956 it is the ministerial recognized emblem.

Münster is twinned with Abtenau in Austria since 1971. After the turn Reinsdorf joined as the second partner municipality in the district of Zwickau.
