Abtenau is a market town ( elevation 1507) with 5733 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the state of Salzburg in the district of Hallein in Austria.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Lammer Valley, in the Tennengau of Salzburg about 45 km south of Salzburg.

By the end of 2002, the village belonged to the district court Abtenau, since 2003 she has been part of the judicial district of Hallein.

The municipality comprises the cadastral village Abtenau, Abtenau market, Fischbach, conducting house, Rigaus, Schorn, Seetratten, Seidegg and Unterberg.

History

1507 Abtenau was raised by the sovereign Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach to the market. 1816 the place with Salzburg Austria. The emancipation of the serfs in 1848 was followed by the formation of the local church in 1850. Explosive growth to a two seasonal holiday began after the Second World War.

The coat of arms of the municipality is: " In the blue field, standing on pflasterartigem ground, the figure of St. Blaise. Goldnimbierter one, with red -clad pluvial bishop, a crosier in his right hand holding a burning candle and in the left"

Policy

The municipal council consists of 25 members, only the mayor and has been working for the municipal elections of 2009 mandates the following parties together: 12 SPÖ, ÖVP 12, 1 FPÖ. Mayor Johann Quehenberger ( SPÖ).

Culture and sights

  • The parish church of St. Blaise of Abtenau comes from the Gothic, but shows through conversions and extensions also baroque features. Worth the high altar and the side altars from the 17th century and the nave in 1939 are exposed vault frescoes of the 16th century.
  • The local museum is located in an ancient farmhouse, the Arlerhof.
  • Furthermore, there is a cinema and a theater in the town.
