Murray Hamilton

Murray Hamilton ( born March 24, 1923 in Washington, North Carolina, † September 1, 1986 ) was an American actor who was best known for roles in the films The Hustler, The Graduate and Jaws.

Life and career

Hamilton was born in 1923 in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Already in his early youth he showed interest in the art of acting. After he was not drafted for military service due to poor hearing achievements, he moved at the age of 19 years to New York City to begin a career as an actor.

In the 1950s and 1960s, he became predominate roles in TV series and played in the theater, where he with Henry Fonda was repeated on the stage. In the late 1950s also followed first major supporting roles in film productions.

For his role in the play Absence of a Cello, he was nominated in 1965 for the Tony Award as Best Supporting Actor, but lost Jack Albertson.

A wider audience, he became known for roles in The Hustler (1961 ) on the side of Paul Newman and The Graduate (1967 ) as Anne Bancroft's husband, Mr. Robinson.

His probably most famous role was that of Amity Mayor Larry Vaughn Iceland in Steven Spielberg's thriller Jaws. Hamilton also appeared in the less successful sequel Jaws 2, and should also in the last part of the series Jaws his role - take over the billing, but died before filming began.

One of his last role was that of Big Daddy Hollingsworth in the sitcom The Golden Girls.

Hamilton died in 1986 from cancer and is in the Oakdale Cemetery his hometown of Washington, North Carolina, buried.
