Murshidabad district

Murshidabad ( Bengali: মুর্শিদাবাদ জেলা, Murśidābād Jela ) is a district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It extends over an area of ​​5324 km ² and has 5.863 million inhabitants ( 2001 census ). The district capital is Baharampur.

Geography

Murshidabad is bordered by the districts of West Bengal, Nadia, Bardhaman, Birbhum and Malda, and the state of Jharkhand. The Ganges forms the border with Bangladesh. Politically, the district is divided into 17 taluks.

The district consists of two river Bhagirathi divided regions, the high level Rarh in the west and the fertile belonging to the Ganges delta in the east Bagri. The western part of the district is characterized by the cultivation of mulberry trees and the eastern part of the rice, jute, mango and cereal crops.

History

In 1197 the area was part of the Kingdom of Gaur was, in the 18th century it took on the British East India Company. Historically significant is the city of Murshidabad, which was once the capital of Bengal. The making influential critical Battle of Plassey, a small village Palashi, took place in this area.
