The Murtala Mohammed International Airport ( IATA: LOS, ICAO: DNMM ) is the largest airport in Nigeria. It is situated at Ikeja, near Lagos. He was named after the former military head of state Murtala Mohammed.

There is a terminal for domestic flights and one for international flights, which are about a kilometer apart. The structure and architecture of the international terminal is based on the Amsterdam airport.

History

The airport was put into operation on 15 March 1979. It was built by the engineer Erwin Steiauf on behalf of Strabag. As a guest of the opening of former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt was welcomed.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, the international terminal for its poor security measures was notorious, did not meet the minimum requirements of ICAO. So it was in and out of the terminal criminal gangs who raided even aircraft on the apron. The immigration and customs officials were known for their corruption - so usually needed when entering an appropriate " stamp fee " to be paid. After warning signs had been erected already in all international U.S. airports in 1993, all flights between Lagos and the USA setting established by the Federal Aviation Administration. After the election of Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 improved the situation at the airport. Lufthansa flies the airport daily.

Incidents and accidents

  • On 23 November 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 from Mumbai and Addis Ababa to Abidjan was kidnapped. After several stopovers (including Lagos ) the aircraft crashed into the Indian Ocean.
  • On 30 January 2000, the flight 431 of the Kenya Airways from Nairobi via Lagos to Abidjan crashed after takeoff from Lagos into the sea.
  • On June 3, 2012, an MD - 83 of Dana Air grazed during landing pylons, as well as a house and crashed into a densely populated residential area. → Main article: Dana Air flight 992
