Myomorpha

Brown rat (Rattus norvegicus)

  • Gerbils ( Dipodoidea )
  • Mice behaved ( Muroidea )

Mice relatives ( Myomorpha ) are a suborder of rodents ( Rodentia ). With over 1600 species, they represent more than a quarter of all mammal species.

Previously, a number of families were counted in this group, Carleton and Musser (2005) have redefined the suborders of rodents by morphological and molecular genetic aspects and take only two superfamilies in this suborder together:

  • The Dipodoidea with a family, the jumping mice ( Dipodidae ) and
  • The superfamily of the mouse -like ( Muroidea ) with the following families: Nesomyidae
  • Burrows ( Cricetidae, the hamsters, voles and Neuweltmäusen )
  • Long-tailed mice ( Muridae )
  • Stachelbilche ( Platacanthomyidae )
  • Spalacidae
  • Mouse Hamster ( Calomyscidae )

Other families who were also formerly reckoned among the mice relatives, today other rodent suborders are allocated. These are:

  • The dormice ( Gliridae ), which are thus counted among the squirrel relatives,
  • The pocket gophers ( Geomyidae ) and pocket mice ( Heteromyidae ), which together with the beavers, the group of beavers relatives ( Castorimorpha ).
