Namibian presidential election, 2004

The presidential elections in Namibia 2004 took place on 15 and 16 November 2004. As a result, Hifikepunye Lucas Pohamba was the winner, who took office as President of Namibia on 21 March 2005.

From a total of 977.742 voters approved a total of 833.165 votes were cast representing a turnout of 85.2 % in the election. The actual number of valid votes amounted to 818.360. As election observers joined, among others, to the Namibian Institute for Democracy.

Electioneering

The election campaign is described as a rather colorless, which was that the opposition had no outstanding personalities and could not do anything against the dominance of the ruling party SWAPO. The struggle for the succession of the former president Samuel Nujoma Shafishuna was almost discharged exclusively within the SWAPO. The theme is only one possible land reform was discussed.

Election results

In response to his election, the new President Pohamba reaffirmed its commitment to continuity and spoke an invitation to potential foreign investors.
