Nanumea

The Nanumea Atoll is the northernmost atoll of the South Pacific island nation of Tuvalu. It is located about 455 km northwest of the capital Funafuti.

The crescent-shaped atoll is approximately 11.5 km long ( north to south) and at most 2.4 km wide. It is based on five main islands ( motu ) and two lagoons formed which separate the two largest islands Nanumea and Lakena each other.

In the southwest of the largest Motu Nanumea is Lolua, the capital of the atoll. According to the 2002 census living on the entire Nanumea Atoll 664 people.

On Lakena there is a fresh water pond, which is extremely rare for atolls.
